Rainbow Snippets – December 16, 2017

Wow, only a couple more weeks until the end of the year! Is it really 2 years since this group started? Anyway, if you’re new to it, authors post links to 6-line teasers from LGBT+ stories with a wide variety of themes. They could be WIPs, published works, recommendations etc. Check out the group HERE and you might find your next favourite read.

I’ve been posting snips from my upcoming story, Summit, for a few months now. I’m hoping to finish the story in the next few weeks and release it around March 2018. In the meantime, a short story collection is on its way, so today’s snippet is from the first story in the book – In Darkest Peru. This was originally written for an anthology, but it didn’t get in the book and was released as a standalone, but it was too short to work like that. That was more than 3 years ago and I have the rights back to it, so I’ve tweaked it here and there, switched it to first person from third person, because I really suck at third person and it didn’t flow well, and added a bit more flavour to it. It also has its own new cover within the collection.

In this snip, main character, Rhys, after being cheated on and dumped by his boyfriend of 5 years, and made redundant from his job, makes a spur of the moment decision to go to Peru on the adventure of a lifetime, prompted by a Paddington Bear toy his lover once gave him.

I sighed heavily and stared at the baggage carousel, waiting for my over-stuffed backpack to appear and having second thoughts, and third ones. I’d done it now. I stood in Arrivals at the airport in Lima, regretting looking at that bloody Paddington Bear and getting such a crazy idea. I didn’t plan anything. During the month since I parted with the airfare, I hadn’t thought about it much. I’d been too concerned with looking for other jobs and trying not to think about the arsehole who ditched me so unceremoniously. I wondered what my chances were of catching a plane home the same day.

  1. Beautifully character driven snippet! I love the inclusion of Paddington Bear in inspiring his decision. (During December, I’m very partial to teddy bears…most of the ornaments on our Christmas tree are teddy bears. :))

  2. I completely understand that issue with anthologies. I had that happen last year. My story would’ve worked much better as part of a collection than on its own. I hope this story finds new life.

  3. I learned something new today. I had no idea Paddington was from Peru – I just found out because I googled it, curious about the link between the bear and Peru 🙂 Thank you 🙂
