Rainbow Snippets – February 11, 2017

11-february-2017

Happy weekend, Snippetting friends. Well, this is almost two weeks since I’ve been suffering from “man flu”, so I haven’t done much in the way of writing or editing. Having read that 10 million people in the UK have got the sniffles (and no doubt elsewhere too) I hope none of you are feeling too bad.

Anyway, this week I have more from my new taboo story, Separation. When you’ve read the teaser, don’t forget to check out the Rainbow Snippets Group. Authors post links to 6-sentence excerpts from WIPs, published works, or recommendations, in a variety of genres, but all with LGBTQI characters. Check them out and you’ll find some amazing stories.

In my last snippet, main character, Matthew Langford, was agonising over the fact that he’d reached his 21st birthday without knowing he had a twin, and had just discovered their father had put him up for adoption as a baby, and kept his brother. After a visit to the local adoption agency, he locates his twin, Tremaine Wheal, living 4 hours away in Devon, and after failed attempts to get through by phone, he drives there. This snippet is of their first meeting, and is slightly over 6 lines as I wanted to squeeze in a tiny bit of dialogue.

I held my breath as the door swung open and I met the unmistakable gray-blue eyes of the other half of me.

“Yes?” He stared at me curiously, gaze sliding down my body and back up to my face. I examined him in the same way. A ragged T-shirt with the faded design of a surfing scene hung outside ripped jeans. Green flip-flops on tanned feet made me imagine him on the beach, maybe in shorts and carrying a surf board. His slender form was well-toned, similar to mine, only I got my physique from the home gym Dad had installed for me. The shape of his nose mirrored mine, but his face was thinner and more chiseled, with his rich tan making my sunbed tone pale in comparison. His hair, mostly mousy-brown, lightened in places by the sun and streaked unevenly with green and blue, brushed his shoulders.

“Um…” My mouth had gone dry. I licked my lips and gulped. “Are you Tremaine Wheal?”

“Yeah?” His eyes narrowed. “Do I know you?”

“I’m… Matthew Langford. I’m adopted. I found out today that you’re, um, my—”

“Shit!” Tremaine’s jaw dropped. “You’re my twin?”

I’ll have another teaser from Separation next week. I’m working on edits at the moment and am hoping to release the story in late March – early April.

  1. Those are cleverly drawn-out distinctions. Lots of detail in this description (if I abandon you halfway through these snippets it’s because of the taboo, not your writing, which I love).

  2. Awesome compare and contrast of the descriptions. I’m curious as to why Tremaine didn’t look for him since he already knew about him.

(I’m also curious about how your twincest story is going to play out since I have one sitting in editing purgatory.)

    1. Thank you 🙂 Tremaine reveals why he didn’t find Matthew in next week’s snippet.

I’m editing Separation too, and hope to release it in around 6 weeks. I’ll definitely be interested to read yours 🙂
