Rainbow Snippets – December 17, 2016

img_20161216_182747051_hdrHappy weekend, Snippetteers! One week until Christmas. Have you all got your shopping done? I put up a little baby tree yesterday, on my windowsill so puppy can’t get it. I have a feeling if I put up my usual six-footer, he’d demolish it in his excitement!

I’ve had a rough week with “man flu” and am still suffering, so I haven’t done any writing this week, or much else or use, but Regeneration is all set to go and I’ll be doing an official cover reveal between Christmas and New Year, so if any of you have a blog space and would like to host me, please let me know.

If you’d like to take part in the Rainbow Snippets group, check it out HERE. Authors post links to 6-line teasers from WIPs, published works, or recommendations. I’ve found lots of great LGBTQ reads there.

Anyway… this week’s snippet is, of course, from Regeneration.

In the 23rd Century in the galaxy of Sigma Kappa, Kim Fortune was the first surviving experimental enhanced human—a regenerate. Aged 15, he escaped the lab and years later, his failings as a regenerate and the suspicion of regular humans, leave him lonely and lacking in self-worth. Stranded on an abandoned planet, the arrival of a stricken ship and its crew give him hope that he may finally find what he always longed for—love.

Christian Novak is a successful regenerate with all the intended attributes—including lack of human emotion. Despite their immediate attraction to each other, Kim’s failing confidence, and Christian’s inability to empathize are a recipe for disaster. But war, imprisonment, and danger throw them together, and after each saves the other’s life, their feelings begin to change.

Can a seemingly unsuitable pair ever find love, or is a future together destined to fail?

Johnson Thacker, one of the supporting character, tries to help Kim with his self-esteem issues.

“You’re very popular with those two,” Johnson said with a smile. He seated himself on his bunk, and I sat opposite on the unused one.

“I don’t know why.”

“You’re very attractive, Kim. And enigmatic.”

“Oh, please.” I snorted.

“Don’t worry, I’m not making a play for you. I’m straight. But I know people. I see what they see in you.”

“I always thought no one would want me. I was created as a regenerate, but I don’t have all their abilities. I’m too human, I guess. I was made to feel like a failure.” The words spilled from me without thought and I froze, waiting for his condemnation.

“There’s nothing wrong with being human, Kim. It’s what makes you appealing. The other abilities you have only make you strong. You shouldn’t think of yourself as a failed regenerate, but as an enhanced human.”

Regeneration will be available on January 15, 2017 from all the usual online eBook sellers.

    1. Sadly everybody – the people at the lab who created him, and then the humans he met who aren’t used to regenerates and view them with suspicion 😦
