Rainbow Snippets – October 15, 2016

Hello, Snippetteers. I hope you all had a great week. I have had my last (fifth!!) trip away this year. I don’t really call them holidays – four out of the five have been trips to my favourite place in the world – the Lake District, UK – where I’ve been doing more training to be a Mountain Leader. It’ll take me 2 – 3 years, I’m guessing, but I’m on my way!

So, to this week’s snippet. Don’t forget to check out the group on Facebook – Rainbow Snippets. Authors are invited to post a link to a 6-line excerpt from a WIP, published work, review etc, of an LGBTQ story. Anyone is welcome to join in.

As mentioned last week, for the next few weeks I will be posting snippets from Regeneration, my sci-fi romance novel that I’m hoping will come out early next year, once I decide on the how/when etc. Here’s my basic “blurb” – I haven’t written a proper one yet, but this will do for now.

In the 23rd Century, in the galaxy of Sigma Kappa, scientists created the first batch of enhanced humans – the regenerates. Kim Fortune is the only survivor of the first batch, but most of his intended attributes didn’t work. He’s incredibly strong, fast, and intelligent, but he can’t see in the dark, self-heal, or regulate his body temperature. In addition, he has far too human emotions. He wants what he thinks he’ll never have – love.

Kim escaped the lab aged 15 and spent the next few years as an explorer. The story starts with a 21 year old Kim, who has actually lived a total of 40 years already, thanks to cryosleep. His crashed ship leaves him stranded on a deserted planet, dubbed Pardus due to its population of Panthera Pardus, vicious man-eating large panther-type animals, and with his ship crippled and his crew long-since dead, the only chance of leaving the isolated and dangerous land is if another ship arrives – which it does, bringing with it Captain Susan, rogue cop Neil, young Dina, the orphaned daughter of the creator of the most sought after drug in the universe, explorer Johnson, and army deserter Christian Novak, a successful fully functioning and reasonably emotionless regenerate. One of these people turns out to be exactly what Kim wants in his life, and fears he’ll never get.

Today’s snippet is a couple of pages in on Chapter 1. Something’s coming – will it be friend or foe?

* * * * *

Several hundred feet above a ship turned in a slow flat spin, its underside parallel to the ground. The stricken ship shuddered ominously, tilted one way, then leveled out again. The vehicle appeared to be similar to the Explorer 9—possibly one of the more recent models, with its smooth curves and reflective surfaces, powered by the same laser propulsion system as its predecessor. Its struggle continued for several minutes with the gap between land and ship gradually lessening. My heart in my mouth, I waited for the imminent crash, hoping the travelers would make it safely and that their ship wouldn’t be too badly damaged. After six months, finally a possibility of escape had arrived.

  1. The blurb sounds quite interesting and the description in the snippet is great. I’m so curious who of the “guests”
